"It's not like there's someone right next to you or someone right on your tail," Mitchell said yesterday as he prepares to defend his eight-year dominance of Hawaii's iconic Molokai to Oahu Ocean Paddling Race. "I mean, there can be 150 out there and I might only see a couple of people for five or 10 minutes at the start and then you're on your own for another four hours, so it's really you and the ocean."

All these festivities are free, but bear in mind that parking on Oahu is a headache at the best of times. For high traffic days such as festival dates, it's better to take the bus. Chinese New Year is a big deal here.
